Since leaving Hunter Valley Grammar School (HVGS) in 2023, Audrey McPherson has embarked on a whirlwind journey filled with academic pursuits, personal growth and significant life changes. Audrey’s life has been a rollercoaster as she juggles her studies at the University of New England, working towards a double degree in a Bachelor of Agriculture and a Bachelor of Laws. This demanding academic path has been combined with precious moments spent with family, especially before her big move to college. Turning 18 and stepping into adulthood has brought a new set of responsibilities and decisions, marking a pivotal chapter in her life.

After school, Audrey made the bold decision to move from her small hometown of Paterson to Armidale, living on campus at Robb College. The describes this as the best decision of her life. The vibrant atmosphere at Robb College, filled with footy, fun and new friendships, has been an exciting and enriching experience. Balancing her studies, she works part-time at Bunnings in Armidale and continues to immerse herself in the family business, Think Green Horticulture, which she established with her late father. Think Green Horticulture, focused on plants, aquaponics and landscaping, has been a rewarding endeavor, allowing her to apply her academic knowledge practically.

The most important lesson Audrey took away from HVGS is the value of persistence and motivation, even in the face of adversity. Losing her father during her school years was an incredibly tough experience, but it taught her the importance of resilience and determination. HVGS provided her with the support and guidance needed during that difficult time, helping her find the strength to keep moving forward both academically and personally. This resilience has been a cornerstone of her journey, reminding her that persistence and motivation are key to overcoming life’s toughest challenges.

Among her cherished memories at HVGS, dancing with her entire Year 12 cohort during their formal dinner stands out. Audrey notes that “it was a bittersweet moment filled with both happiness and sadness as we realised our time together was coming to an end.” She describes the energy in the room as electric and seeing everyone laughing and enjoying each other’s company made the moment unforgettable. It reminded her of the strong bond they had formed throughout their time at HVGS, celebrating friendships before embarking on separate journeys.

Personal strength has been the trait most vital in helping Audrey succeed. It has been the backbone of her resilience, enabling her to navigate challenges and setbacks with determination and perseverance. This inner resilience pushes her to keep going and empowers her to stay focused on her goals despite obstacles. Personal strength has not only helped her overcome challenges but also built her confidence and a positive mindset, propelling her towards success in her post-school life.

Audrey’s proudest moment since leaving HVGS has been her decision to move away from home and fully immerse herself in college life in Armidale, despite leaving her mother home alone. This daunting leap, with only two familiar faces in a new environment, was a necessary step for her personal and academic growth. Embracing the challenges of independence and new experiences has been incredibly empowering.

Looking ahead, Audrey envisions the next ten years deeply entrenched in the intersection of Agriculture and Law, with a focus on sustainability for both cropping and livestock. She sees herself actively involved in initiatives promoting sustainable agricultural practices and advocating for policies prioritizing environmental conservation and ethical treatment of livestock. Additionally, she aspires to dedicate her time and skills to service-oriented endeavors, volunteering with non-profit organizations like Rural Aid to support rural communities in need. Alongside her professional pursuits, Audrey envisions playing a role in leadership and mental health advocacy, collaborating with organisations committed to these causes. While the specifics may be uncertain, she is determined to navigate the journey with a robust support system, embracing challenges and opportunities with resilience and determination.
